The center was to house women\u2019s associations, as well as reading rooms, a dining room, an information center, and accommodation for young women from the country who had come to Reykjav\u00edk for work or study. For the rest of her life, Laufey devoted her efforts to making the dream a reality, and she served for many years as chair of the fundraising committee.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The women\u2019s center was named Hallveigarsta\u00f0ir, or Hallveig\u2019s Place, in honor of Hallveig Fr\u00f3\u00f0ad\u00f3ttir, the first woman known to have settled in Reykjav\u00edk, in the late 9th century. A joint-stock company was founded to finance the construction of the building, and women and women\u2019s associations around the country were invited to buy shares. They did so in large numbers, thus contributing to raising money for Hallveigarsta\u00f0ir. The groundbreaking ceremony took place in 1954, and Hallveigarsta\u00f0ir was formally opened in 1967 on 19 June \u2013 Women\u2019s Rights Day in Iceland \u2013 about half a century after the idea of such a center was first proposed.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, the building is owned by three women\u2019s organizations: the Federation of Women\u2019s Societies in Reykjav\u00edk, the Federation of Icelandic Women\u2019s Societies, and the Icelandic Women\u2019s Rights Association. A wide range of women\u2019s groups are based at Hallveigarsta\u00f0ir and have meeting facilities there.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Women\u2019s House Hallveigarsta\u00f0ir owes its existence to the efforts of innumerable women and organisations who strove for decades to make it a reality.
